MEET JAMES FRIEND DICKERSON

As a Charlottesville native, James attended grade school in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. When his family moved to Louisa County in the mid-70's, James transferred to Louisa County High School. As a teenager time was spent enjoying Lake Anna, camping, and working on neighborhood farms for spending money. Active in the Boy Scouts of America, James achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and earned the God and Country Award plus: traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico to hike and camp in the Rocky Mountains for 12 days; served on the staff of the 1977 National Scout Jamboree; served of Chief of Shenandoah Lodge No. 258; and spent two summers on the staff of Camp Shenandoah. After high school, James enrolled in Virginia Tech graduating in 1984 with a BS Degree in Forestry and Wildlife Management specializing in evironmental conservation. While living in Blacksburg, James worked as Personnel Manager of Squires Food Service managing a restaurant, snack bar and catering service and volunteered with a local Boy Scout Troop as Assistant Scoutmaster. With the tight job market in the mid 80's, James was fortunate to have a background in Food Service. An initial job with The Radisson Hotel Corporation lead to promotions with Omni Hotels, Sheridan Hotels, and finally working for Victor Management in Williamsburg.

The Williamsburg job included earning a Virginia Real Estate License due to the multifaceted nature of the operation. Once armed with a Real Estate License, James moved back to Charlottesville. Working in Property Management he developed systems and computerizing the management activities of a local firm. The time spent in Property Management provided James with valuable experience working with investors, tenants, developers, fair housing and landlord-tenant regulations. Gradually Jim entered the world of real estate sales and joined the Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS, the Virginia Association of REALTORS, and the National Association of REALTORS.

To stay abreast of developments in the industry and the latest trends, James attends many educational programs and seminars. Initially he earned the Graduate of the REALTORS Institute (GRI) and continues to take Fair Housing, Landlord-Tenant, Finance, and REALTORS Land Institute courses in addition to the required licensing renewal courses. As a REALTOR Jim has developed a unique consulting business working with the standard commission arrangement or a fee for services agreement. The consulting services allow a diverse group of clients from first time home buyers to multi-property investors to sellers of farms and land to receive individual assistance tailored to their specific needs.

The environmental conservation and forestry background helps James when working with landowner in situating houses, barns, driveways, ponds and other improvements to their property. James continues to assist in the management of two family tree farms and maintains membership in The Society of American Foresters and the Virginia Forestry Association. Using his hand held global positioning system (GPS) and several software programs, James has the ability to develop site specific maps or farms, timberland and other large tracts. Incorporating soils, topographic, and other data into the mapping, James has help clients to identify and purchase land for vineyards, timber and pasture.

In his time off James enjoys spending time with Karen (they were married in 2000 and are still on their honeymoon!) and their family. Recently James and Karen built a new home so that Karen's mother could live with them. Fishing, trips to the Outer Banks or B&B's in the mountains, and walks in
the woods provide escapes from the work week. Jim also remains active in his church serving as a lay leader, lay speaker and on several committees. To give back to his community, Jim served on the Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation Board as a director for five years, helps staff Virginia Blood Services blood drives, raises money for the Children's Medical Center
